A backyard swimming pool is a fun place to relax, cool off, and spend time with friends and family. Here are some tips to help you improve swimming pool safety and keep the area safe and secure all season long.
Barriers for Swimming Pool Safety
Barriers around the swimming pool will help prevent an accident. Install a gate and fence that small children aren’t able to climb over or open. This will prevent kids and pets from getting into the pool area unsupervised.
Inspect fences and gates regularly to make sure they are secure. Repair or replace them if you notice any vulnerable areas. An alarm system on the gate or even a motion sensor in the water will alert you anytime someone enters the pool without your knowledge.
Drain and Pool Covers
Suction from the pool drain has can cause serious injuries and even death. Install a tight-fitting drain cover. Even with a drain cover securely in place, teach kids to stay away from pool drains. When the pool isn’t being used, cover it with a pool cover.
Don’t Swim Alone
It isn’t recommended for anyone to be in the pool alone, including adults. If kids are swimming, there should always be at least one adult supervising. If you have to leave even for a minute, ask someone else to watch the kids until you return.
Swim Lessons Promote Pool Safety
Everyone in the household should learn how to swim. Enroll kids in swim lessons at an early age. Talk to your children about the importance of pool safety and remind them to only use the pool when an adult is present.
Emergencies
While your pool safety measures should help to prevent accidents, there may still be an emergency. Keep a phone and first aid kit accessible in the pool area. Adults and older children should complete a CPR certification class.
Be diligent about who has access to the pool, supervise children at all times, and keep the area secure. You don’t want anyone gaining access to your pool without permission to do so.
